I enjoy Halloween. Everyone at Pixel Farm goes to the Channel Z costume party. This was my first time, and...If you're gonna dress up, you should go all out. So I dreamt up this costume design.

His name is Lazarus! He's inspired by and meant to fit into the Heavy Metal universe. Likely, a villain... If you've never heard of Heavy Metal, it's an 80s 2D animated headtrip film with music! There's a little Austrian Bond Villain, Bowie Glam Rock and Gaga in there too... I got lots of compliments!

Accessories included a laser gun, disco stick/diamond cane, studded gloves, a skull ring, and lots of chains! I found the materials at a few different places and made a few things with craft supplies. I was unable to aqcuire/create a diamond nutcup or my furry leggings. Oh well! Next year...

I got to help work on this!

Well, I offered as much help as one can during the last two weeks of a four month project... Good start to an Externship!

This was my first time Rotoscoping. Luckily for me Alicia from Pixel Farm is a good teacher and super helpful. I roto'd the balloons, pink dress, and some background stuff in the Balloon shot. Before that, I roto'd all the jumping actors in the shot near the end. Their legs weren't in front of the green-screen... I also roto'd some of the still images seen as animated cut-outs in the open. Along with the photo roto, I had to paint the redheads body back in. Frankenstein style! I feel good about finally putting these skills to some use.

The most exciting part of this project was animating the "American Style, Priced for All"; the flipping letters that you see at the end. Alicia and I both animated two versions so we could bring four different arrangements to TomJ. He chose mine! Whoohoo! 20 minutes well spent... I animated for a Target ad!

It is exciting to tell people I got to work on something like this. Everybody here gets to do this work all the time, so I kind of have to contain my excitement around them, lest I expose myself as the dweeb.

Externship at Pixel Farm

For the past three weeks I have been an Extern (Post graduate, paid intern) at Pixel Farm. It's been a great experience so far, but what makes it even better is that it fell into my lap by chance.

Before Graduation, I had been resigned to get a job at Office Max and prepare for my next step, Animation Mentor. I was not expecting to get such a great response from my portfolio show. I'm sometimes modest to a fault, so I was pleasantly surprised to hear from Rich Haesmeyer, Director of Animation at Pixel Farm, right after the show.

I met Rich earlier that day when he came to my table. He picked up one of my demos, opened it, and then placed one of my business cards in it. This reminded me I had forgotten to do that... He also really liked my artwork and I talked to him a little bit about my cut-out style animation work. At the time, I didn't know who he was or the studio he'd come from. As he left my table, I was more preoccupied with filling all my dvds with business cards... I got an email from him that afternoon. He said he liked my work and invited me to visit Pixel Farm.

Pixel Farm? MOI?? I never would have expected to wind up there. The people I know working at Pixel Farm are of EPIC talents! They do amazing 3D Animation and VFX work, so what's there for me to do?

So, I went into my visit with no expectations. The place is amazing! Rich was very enthusiastic about my artwork and my reel. He wanted to know about my plans and whether I was open to freelance or possible work there in the future. I felt like it went really well, but I know a good thing when I see it and I also know I have a LOT to learn still. So, in my "thank you" email, I asked if he had any internships available... AND that's what I got! Oh yeah! Sweetening the pot, I am getting paid! I would have done it for free...

So far, things are going really well. I learned how to rotoscope on my first day and a simple animation I did made it into an ad for TARGET! You can't beat the environment, this office is awesome! I like the people, and I also know several of the freelancers from school, so it felt familiar right away...

I'm hoping to learn a lot more there, and of course, I'm doing my best. I think the best traits I have right now are resilience, adaptability, and the belief that I can make it as an artist. Getting artistic praise from someone outside of my school was a huge boost for me. I definitely needed to hear it.

On Friday Decemember 17th, 2010, I Robert Edwin Mostoller...GRADUATED!!! With honors! I now have a Bachelor's of Science in Media Arts & Animation from the Art Institutes International Minnesota. I also got some exposure at our Graduate Portfolio Show, so hopefully that will amount to something soon. I thought I did pretty well at the show and it was really encouraging. I feel energized to get working fast!

I will miss a lot of people at Ai, and even a few jackasses... Because I was the last of my close friends to graduate, I often felt like a lonely ghoul haunting the place for those last few quarters...Either people had already graduated or we were all separated. It didn't help I left only generals for the last year of school... REGARTLASS, it sooked!

Moving forward, I have a lot ideas of what I want to do next. First off, I need to work a bit. I have so little work experience yet. Then, I'd like to continue my education in some sort of Graduate study or Animation Mentor. I'm also interested in taking some classes at Schoolism.com It's all up in the air right now, and I really need to investigate my options further.

My idols are Britney Lee, Glen Keane, James Baxter, Xavier Ramonède, and Soyeon Kim to name a few... I want to be like all of them! I'd love to get more into Visual Development and someday produce animated shorts or features. OR I'd like to illustrate children's books. OR I'd like to continue further down the animation route...hence up in the air. Yeah, Hence! (The House Bunny)

I'm not sure which path is for me yet, but I am very thankful to be done! Thanks to my family, friends, and faculty that helped me along the way. If I don't see yah again soon, I'll miss yah!

This is our final project for Team Animation. Sarah Poltiske and myself worked on this together. It was just the two of us, and our first time working in this "cut-out" style, using only After Effects with pieces made in Photoshop. We basically only got the first pass of Character Animation done.

It was fun! I'm pretty proud of it, since it's my first real short.

We basically split the project work evenly. I came up with the story. We worked out the script and storyboard together. We both designed two characters. Sarah made the animatic. I made all the backgrounds and bg pieces. Sarah made the cut-outs. AND then we both animated an equal chunk. And I rendered it all out. Finito.

For an assignment in my Portfolio Presentation class we had to get an interview with a non-local professional. I emailed several of my favorite artists, and was lucky to get an great interview from exceptionally talented Animator and designer, Brittney Lee.

1. So, what first got you interested in design and animation artwork?

I have always been interested in drawing, but my love for the art of animation really solidified when I saw The Little Mermaid when I was very young. I used to draw scenes from the movie and send them to Disney just to show the people who worked on the film how much I loved it! The superior quality of the animated films of the 90s helped to keep my interest throughout my childhood and adolescence, and so when it came time for me to choose what I wanted to study in college, the choice wasn't very difficult.

2. There's not too much background on your blog, so I'm curious to know about where you went to school and where you are currently working.

I am originally from Pennsylvania, and I went to college at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. I studied animation at RIT's School of Film and Animation. After graduating, I moved out to San Francisco where I worked at a small online game company called Three Rings Design for two and a half years. I left Three Rings in February and have been working as a freelance animator, illustrator and designer since.

3. Are you a self-taught artist or was school a necessity?

School was certainly a necessity. I have been very fortunate to have had many gifted teachers who have taught me a great deal, but possibly more important has been everything that I've learned from my peers. My friends and classmates have always been and continue to be a HUGE source of inspiration for me. Without school, I would never have met some of my greatest friends and teachers.

4. What projects are you currently working on? Anything freelance?

I'm currently juggling several different projects, but I'm not sure that I can say much about any of them. I just finished illustrating a Plug 'N Play book for Leapfrog, and have a few more book projects in the works. Prior to that I was doing some game design and animation, some packaging design for a toy company, and some ride concepts for theme parks.

5. What tools do you use?

When I work digitally (which is what I end up doing for most of my freelance work) I paint in photoshop and I animate mainly in Flash.

When I work on commissions and original artwork, anything goes. I usually paint with some combination of watercolor, acrylic, gouache, and/or ink. The paper sculpt work that I do consists of acid-free papers and cardstocks with painted details on top. For those, the main tools I use are my scissors, X-Acto knife, cutting board, permanent acid-free glue, and a bone folder.

6. What are some of the most valued skills for someone just starting out?

Being open to new experiences and responsibilities is certainly an essential quality for someone who is just starting out. A lot of people graduate from school with the idea that they are owed a certain position, and often are disappointed. In my experience, those who are just willing to work hard and tackle any opportunities that arise are the most successful and satisfied young professionals. They are also the ones who seem to excel and advance in their fields the fastest.

7. Where have you worked in the past? Is work satisfactory?

The one studio where I worked in the past was Three Rings Design. I worked on a Flash-based virtual world game (called Whirled) and spent my days designing and animating Flash assets for the game. I was a fantastic first job because I got experience doing everything from character design and animation to layout to game design. I learned quite a lot in a very short amount of time.

My work as a freelancer really came quite by accident, but I have been very lucky and work has been steady. I enjoy the challenge of managing my schedule and projects and think it is quite possible that I'm learning more right now than I ever have before.

8. Is there anything you wish you'd known before starting your career? Any cautionary tales?

The only thing I really wish that I would have known before I started my career is that it really is okay to just go for what you love, and everything else will fall into place. As long as you are doing something that is fulfilling to you, the money will come. And if you find yourself stuck in a position you are unhappy with, it is always okay to leave and find something else.

9. What artists do you admire most, and how were they influential to your work?

I have always (and still do) aspire to be a traditional character animator, and Glen Keane has been my hero for as long as I can remember. His incredible draftsmanship and obvious passion to breathe life into every drawing never ceases to amaze me. Watching videos of him explaining his process or teaching a class always brings me back to that initial feeling of “Yes, this is what I want to do for aliving!”

10. What artistic goals do you have for the future? Is there a dream job?

My artistic goals are always changing, but I certainly do have dream jobs. I have always wanted to work in Feature Animation in some capacity, whether it be in animation or visual development. In some round-about way, that has always been the goal that I have worked toward, and I'm still plugging away at it :)

This is an animatic for my final animation in Intermediate 3D Animation. Shannon only allowed us 15 seconds of time, which kind of sucks if your narrative needs like 30...It goes by pretty facs. Oh well, enjoy...SPORK!

Lomax Pose-Off! (or Pose Throw Down?)

I did all of these for an assignment in my Intermediate 3D Animation class. We had a posing and sketching session, and then we recreated the poses with Lomax. I really enjoyed the exercise. A lot of the volunteers who acted these out were friends of mine. They did a great job!
